In order to help a lot of students who are interested about laws, Menlo College will provide prelaw minor beginning in fall-2012.

This idea was first proposed in 2010 when the faculty realized that a lot of Menlo students are interested in going to law school. To help them achieve their goal, the faculty decided there was a need to introduce concepts such as corporate law, real state law, and constitutional law.

"I can't say it is unnecessary. I'm taking ethics, operational behavior and all those business-relate classes. They all touch on principles and regulations. It will be that kind of knowledge that is very handy to have," said Eason Qiao, a senior student of Menlo.

This is an opportunity for every Menlo student to earn "analytical ability, writing ability, logical reasoning, and forming rational arguments." said Prof Melissa Michelson. These are skills and abilities that every student needs to apply to every stage of his or her life-long experiences. Besides, providing prelaw courses is a beneficial decision to our society as well.

"Lawyers are very important. They make sure people are treated fairly, make sure rules are followed. A lot of policy making, a lot of decisions that affect people and businesses are made in the courts," said Professor Melissa Michelson. "So you need to have lawyers out there who are trained. So why not Menlo lawyers?"

Prelaw is the first minor offered at Menlo College. The program will be submitted to the senate in spring, 2012, and, if approved, the minor will be introduced to every Menlo student in Fall, 2012.

Currently, four courses are scheduled to be offered to all majors.
