Byannca Marquez has leadership on her mind.

In September, Marquez, from Diamond Bar in Southern California, was elected president of the Freshman Class.

As president, Marquez intends to get involved in the campus community and help her fellow students have an enjoyable college experience. She says she is not afraid to step out of her comfort zone, especially when it comes to listening to others and trying out new and creative ideas.

This is not Marquez's first experience with student government. She was active on the student council at Northview High School, where she also was a member of the women's wrestling team.

Wrestling is one of the things that attracted Marquez to Menlo College.

"The women's wrestling team coach Marcie Vandusen played a big role in my decision," Marquez said. "I love the school and the positive atmosphere. Being part of the wrestling team under Coach Marcie's belt can help me reach my goals, both athletically and academically."

Marquez also sees the benefits of Menlo's size.

"The fact that it is a small school suits the students well," she said. "The faculty really looks out for us and our success. They're great."

Coach Vandusen appreciates the balance Marquez brings to Menlo and to the women's wrestling team.

Byannca is "well-rounded, outgoing, and a great leader, not to mention an excellent wrestler.

"She balances her life with both school and wrestling and she keeps her priorities straight," Vandusen contined. "She works hard and is one of the team's captains, even as a freshman."

Marquez is the older of two siblings. Her younger brother is 12 years old. She plans to study Sports Management at Menlo.

Everyone has an idol, someone they look up to. For Marquez, it's her mother.

"She's my rock, strength, and best friend. There is nothing like unconditional love. She's amazing."
