The new senior capstone class, Launching the Venture, held their third event Saturday November 14, 2009. 16 Entertainment, who hosted this 18 an over event, The Black and White Affair, was held at the British Bankers Club in Menlo Park. This was their most successful event of the semester long course.
The doors opened at 10:30 pm and within an hour and a half the BBC met maximum capacity. By 11:00 pm the entrance had a line almost reaching the street.
The dance floor was packed. From upstairs all you could see were hundreds of bodies dressed in black and white flooding the dance floor. Go-go dancers were putting on a show on top of the down stairs bar. Upstairs there was a 21 and over VIP lounge set up with an Ice Luge. The Ice Luge was the hit of the night, guests at the BBC were able to order shots of their choice and then take their shots using the Ice Luge. Outside were two fire pits as well as sitting room available. Everyone was dressed in black and white to fit the theme of the party.
16 Entertainment had members of their class stationed in different sections throughout the night. They were monitoring the entrance as well as the Ice Luge. Tickets were on sale the week prior for $5 and $10 for guests who paid at the door.
The final event 16 Entertainment that was supposed to be held on November 21, 2009 is now cancelled due to liability issues.
"I considered the black and white affair a huge success. This was a really unique opportunity to take the skills we learned in school and put them into a profitable business operation. With the business we chose we were able to make it fun and interesting and very profitable" Aram Hava- Salan comments on the event and the class itself.
When asked his opinion on this class being run as a year long course Salan states, "We had all the marketing down, we were very confident and this event made us see how it was possible to get something off the ground, in general I think the class would be very successful if it was a year long, because we would have another semester to perfect what we had started.
The students in this class truly came together as a team and put on one of the best events Menlo College has seen in a long time. The school gave them the opportunity to test their business skills and they succeeded paving the way for future students who will be taking this class. 75% of their earnings for this year are being donated to Doctors Without Borders and the other 25% will go into a fund for future students taking this class.
Menlo College junior Mackenzie McCoy comments, "I liked the black and white affair and I had a lot of fun. The turnout was good. My favorite part of the night was the Ice Luge and watching everyone take shots from it. I like that we have events at the BBC that people actually go to and that it went to a good cause"
